Firefox 1.5! November 30, 2005

Posted by Robin in : Uncategorized , 1 comment so far

Lots, and lots and lots and lots of news about the new Firefox 1.5, but they all boil down to one thing….

GET IT!!!

But wait! Don’t go to mozilla.org quite yet! The older Firefox’s can update themselves remember ;) . Just go into Tools -> Options… and look under the updates stuff. You’ll find a button to check for new updates which will get you the new version from the Automatic Update Service.

The great news for developers and testers, is that more focus will now go on trunk and the nightlies, get ready for new features galore! (I hope)

Ad-supported applications: just say no by ZDNet’s Phil Wainewright — The CEOs of NetSuite, WebSideStory and WebEx all agree with the majority of TalkBack posters — ad-funded on-demand business applications make no sense at all.

Sounds like Microsoft would have some opposition to it’s plans….again. Really, who would think a business would want it’s work force looking at ads, instead of working?

RSS extensions, not really simple

Anyone that’s heard the hype (C|Net, eWeek, BetaNews), or read the sepc on Microsoft’s “Simple Sharing Extensions for RSS and OPML”, aka. SSE, will realize that it also adds lots of complexity to RSS.The real question is, why RSS? Microsoft’s “extension” is more like a whole new XML beast than RSS.

Why? Publicity. RSS is fairly well known, so why say something like XML-SSE, when you can say “extended RSS”, or fib and call it just “RSS”? The fact is, THIS ISN’T RSS, it might somehow be based on it, but it’s not Really Simple Syndication in any way.

This is just marketing hype by Microsoft, and I hope people won’t get sucked into saying “Microsoft is supporting RSS standards now”…JScript…need I say more?

Not making left turns saves money? November 22, 2005

OK, I’m intrigued. I just read this, UPS: Driving cost savings by eliminating left-hand turns:
The package flow optimization includes constant wireless communications via the DIADs, smart labels (including RFID in the future) and preloading vehicles and directing drivers according to advanced analytics that calculate the most efficient routes, including avoiding left-hand turns, based on the package load.

Now the question is, can removing left turns really save that much money for the average Joe? Probably not. This supposedly works for UPS in cities because, when making a left hand turn, you need to cross opposing traffic. I personally don’t see how this would work because, at least in Canada, a left turn signal is given, then the full green on traffic lights.

Have I missed something here? I’d be interested in someone more knowledgeable then myself having a peek at this.
