Flock is gone…long live flock? December 31, 2005

I think Christ Messina finally did one interview too many…yup…he’s lost his marbles. (sub-link)

Of course, this was predicted months ago when he became the official “hand waver” at CivicSpace :P

Note: The typo in Chris’ name was completely unintentional…mabey the craziness is catching?

Unkillable weeds, Unkillable viruses.

The Guardian has posted a story about gene-enhanced weeds that are resistant to herbicide (although the short description on the article says “pesticide”, which is noticibly wrong) poses another question, gene-enhanced bugs, or anything.
Government testing of genetics editing is obvousily out of control, I’m not a “sky is falling” kind of person, but this is scary. What else has been tested and released? Could SARS and West Nile really have developed their deadliness all by themselves? With ongoing testing of plage/black death and many other viruses in labs, is it not unreasonable to assume that these could combine with the ordinary cold too become a modern killer?
This latest announcement shows that lab experiments do escape, just what will escape next?

Gossip, the perfect gift this Christmas December 24, 2005

Posted by Robin in : Gossip , add a comment

It seems the perfect gift this Christmas is gossip. Poor Opera has been rumored to be bought so many times to be humorus. Like this quote from OperaWatch:

Given the recent surge in acquisition rumors (first Google, and now Microsoft), I thought it would be nice to see which company Opera Watch readers think will be in the next rumor claiming that it will purchase Opera.

  • Yahoo (Yahoopera)
  • Apple (Appera)
  • Nokia (Nopera)
  • McDonald’s (McDopera)
  • Other

Vote here.

Oddly enough, McDonald’s is voted top. Who’d a thunk it?

But this makes a point of how quickly rumors spread on the net now, with slashdot becoming just some gossip list. What do you think about this? Should the web just be a gossip hive? Was the web intended to be used this way? And is it acceptable to spead such rumors without truth?

UPDATE:

Seems there has been progress, Opera has bought Opera!  Who would have thought! ;)

Analysts value the deal at 42 liters of hot air, the estimated net worth of the blogosphere’s journalistic abilities.

Dell embraces Firefox December 20, 2005

Dell, one of the largest PC makers, has begun to put Firefox on their UK PCs. The Inquirer posted a article suggesting it might be true, which was later confirmed by Blake Ross, with a promise of more information later on. (See also: Netscape on HP)
This could further push consumers away from Microsoft products, as open source products are more frequently bundled with new PCs. Let’s see if they won’t put OpenOffice.org on those PCs too :)

Opera and Slashdot and Google and Bigmouths December 16, 2005

Remember my post yesterday with the opera->google rumors (1,2)? Well, it looks the the gossip has gone even further. As I predicted, the ““I want to get slashdotted

Mixed up messes December 15, 2005

The web is full of mixed up messes and messages. Take this story from the highly gossipy techwhack (who might deserve a wack), and the counter story from the countering Opera Watchers.

It demonstrates just how far people will go just to get some publicity. The “I want to get slashdotted” syndrome.

Seen some more examples? Post them here!
