HAMSTER Burns and Copies CD/DVDs for Free
This product was discontinued, ImgBurn still exists and I’d recommend using them instead.
In a recent want to find better general CD/DVD burning software than ImgBurn (which, I still absolutely love — it’s also free) for day-to-day data burning I began searching over the various free CD/DVD burners for Windows, but had serious issues finding anything that could compare to the usable user interface of products like Nero Essentials (a copy of which seems to ship with every CD/DVD drive I buy). Today I was lucky enough to stumble across Hamster’s line of free software and one of their offerings immediately had me rushing for the download link. Hamster Free Burning Studio (beta, as of this writing) looks sleek and promised a free replacement to more expensive suites.
In the beta version I tested only burning CD/DVD data and the copying discs features are supported; with the promise of more options that would likely become available in future updates to the product. The interface is slick and well-focused; making it easy to use, even for less-technical computer users. It performed admirably in all the tests I placed it though, working well with my DVD burner and producing the same speed and quality burns you’d expect from more expensive or bundled software. The included mini-mode is also helpful, providing a way to collapse the software unobtrusively to the side as you drag and drop the files you want onto it.
It’s also tiny, weighing in at just over 6MB. If you’re looking for something better than the crippleware you received with your DVD burner, or are looking for good CD/DVD burning software in general, give Hamster a try — it definitely impressed me. I’ve already switched to using this from the complicated multi-step wizards from the Nero suite I recently paid for.
